AI got better again. Has your moat kept up?

October 04, 2026•3 min read

Over the last three issues, you found your moat, started widening it, and put a name on it. Here's the part nobody mentions: AI tools keep improving, so something that was hard for them in the spring may be routine by now. Q4 is the right time to check, with calibration conversations and next year's planning both close. This week the series wraps with a 15-minute check you can repeat every quarter.

🧠 AI Workflow of the Week: The 15-Minute Moat Check

A moat only works if it keeps pace with the tools. This workflow has AI re-test your moat each quarter, so you catch drift early and decide what to hand off and what to deepen.

1. Gather— Pull your moat sentence from Issue #6 and your "only you can do" list from Issue #4. Add a line on what's changed since last quarter: new projects, new AI tools your team uses, anything you do differently now.
2. Re-test— Paste it all into your AI tool with the prompt below. It marks each item as still hard for AI, partly handled, or now routine.
3. Decide— For every "partly" or "routine" item, pick one move: hand it to AI and reclaim the hours (Issue #5), or deepen it with judgment, relationships, or context a tool can't copy.
4. Update— Revise your moat sentence if it changed, then book the next check on your calendar.

Total time: about 15 minutes. It's hard to see your own strengths going stale, and AI has no ego about telling you. Better to hear it now than in a calibration meeting.

⚡ Prompt of the Week

"Here's my moat statement: [paste your sentence from Issue #6]. Here's what it rests on: [paste your "only me" list]. Here's what's changed since last quarter, in my work or in the AI tools I use: [paste notes, or "not sure"]. For each item, tell me whether an AI tool can now do it well enough that it's no longer a differentiator (yes, partly, or no), and why. For anything marked yes or partly, suggest one move: hand it off to AI, or deepen it with judgment, relationships, or context. Then rewrite my moat statement in one sentence if it needs to change."

🛠 Tool of the Week: Your Calendar

Skip the new app. Create a recurring 15-minute event on the first Monday of every quarter, title it "Moat check," and paste this week's prompt into the description. It's for anyone who has made a good plan and never looked at it again.

💼 Career Tip: Hand It Off Before You're Asked To

When a task becomes routine for AI, don't guard it. Be the first to hand it off, and show what you did with the time. People who announce the shift look like they're leading change. People caught guarding the old work look like they're behind it.

🎯 THIS WEEK'S CORPORATE UPGRADE Before Monday, spend 15 minutes: run the prompt once on your current moat, then book the recurring "Moat check" for the first Monday of next quarter. If your sentence changed, update your profile field this week too.
